About TBC

Tabernacle Baptist is a ministry born out of a vision which was given to the pastor in 1972. The vision challenged the heart of the pastor to enter into the ministry to primarily address the spiritual needs of the black community.

Pastor Wheeler was licensed to preach the gospel by First Baptist of Accokeek, MD on July 4, 1976. Having a passion for souls the Lord had burdened our pastor’s heart to reach the Shirley Duke community with the gospel. With the help and support of men like Tom George, John Perry and Clyde Pearson a home bible class was established. The bible class begins to grow as men and women hungered for the living bread. It wasn’t long before the bible class had moved into the art room of Patrick Henry Elementary School.

With no Independent Baptist Church in the area brother Tom George came up with the idea of starting a church. As a young preacher it was understood that Brother George, who was my senior and mentor was to be the pastor of this inner city work. But circumstances and situations would not permit this, thus the mantel fell upon the young and inexperienced preacher. With a group of faithful and committed young believers, First Baptist of Shirley Duke was established in 1977. Members enthusiastically shared their faith and the power and authority of the word of God began to impact families and communities for Christ. Throughout the years, the church has gone through a transition from First Baptist of Shirley Duke to First Baptist of Foxchase, to now Tabernacle Baptist Church.

The Lord has blessed Tabernacle with an unyielding conviction that, ‘God’s Word is the answer to Man’s questions’, and that the Lord Jesus is the solution to man’s problems.

For over thirty-five years, Tabernacle has stood upon the unchanging Word of God, in these compromising and challenging times.

Today, Tabernacle Baptist Church is a multicultural congregation which worships the Lord in spirit and in truth. With a passion for souls and a burden for a backslidden nation, we pray to see the flames of revival ignite in our churches once again.

As we look back at many of the unsung heroes of the thirty-five years of ministry of Tabernacle who have gone home to be with the Lord, we praise God for the late Robert Milton a true soul winner, the late June Pearson who was a godly example to all the ladies, Sister Bobbie McGee a spiritual inspiration to us all, Sister Carlista Jackson who spread love and kisses to all, Sister Nancy Moore who adopted the pastor as her son, and just this year our dear Sister Florence Contee, a real soldier for the cause of Christ.

Tabernacle will forever be grateful for the faithful service of it’s members and for all those who are still on the battlefield laboring until Jesus comes. May the Lord continue to show us His mercy and grace as we march on to victory. One glorious day we shall see our Lord face to face.

Looking unto Jesus, Tabernacle Baptist “a little church...with a big message”.

To God be the glory great things He has done!

The Holy Scriptures

We believe the Holy Scriptures to be the verbal, inspired Word of God, final in authority, and without error. We further believe that the Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments are designed for our practical instruction in faith and conduct. (II Timothy 3:16-17 ; II Peter 1:21 ; I Corinthians 10:11 ; Matthew 4:4 )

The Godhead

We believe there is one true and living God, the Creator of all things, and that through His creation His eternal power and Godhead are clearly seen. He exists in three persons: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. These three (3) are co-equal before all time, each with distinct personalities but of one essence (Deuteronomy 6:4; Genesis 1:26, Romans 1:19-20; Matthew 28:19)

The Person and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ

We believe that in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, He is the eternal Son of God, He is the exact likeness of the unseen God, He is the First-born of all creation, in Him all things were created and exist through and in and for Him, He Himself existed before all things and in Him all things consist and are held together, the sum total of the divine perfection, powers and attributes dwell permanently in Him, came into the world to redeem mankind. To this end, He was born of the Virgin Mary, received a human body and a sinless human nature, fulfill the Law, fulfill prophecies, shed His blood on Calvary as a delegated substitute for all sin, that He died, was buried and rose again bodily and ascended to the right hand of the Father, whereby God has exalted Him to the highest, giving Him a name which is above every name. (Matthew 5:17; Luke 1:30-35; John 1:1,14,18; II Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 2:5-11; Ephesians 1:20-22; Colossians 1:15-19) We believe that in infinite love for the Father, He voluntarily accepted His Father's will and became the divinely provided sacrificial Lamb and took away the sins of the world. (Romans 3:25-36; II Corinthians 5:14; Hebrews 10:5-14)

We believe that no one can enter the kingdom of God unless born again spiritually, and that the new birth of the believer comes only through faith in Christ, the Son of God. Also, we believe that our redemption has been accomplished by the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and that our salvation is by the grace of God, an unmerited gift, given in love by God and not the result of any human works. (John 18; I Peter 1:23; I Peter 1:18-19; Ephesians 2:4-9)

We believe that God gives to those who put their faith in the finished work of Christ, have complete assurance of their salvation and for those who reject Christ, eternal punishment in an actual hell of fire and brimstone. (I John 5:9-13; Revelation 14:9; Revelation 20:11-15)

The Rapture and the Second Coming of Christ

We believe that a future seven year tribulation period on the earth will be climaxed by the return of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth as King of kings and Lord of lords whereby He will subdue the earth and establish His millennial kingdom. But prior to this tribulation period, we believe that there will be the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ in the air to receive to himself into heaven both His own who are alive and remain until His coming and also those who have died in Christ Jesus. (Daniel 9:24-27; Matthew 24:27-31; I Thessalonians 4:13-17)

Separated Life for Believers

We believe that all believers should separate themselves from anything that will contaminate and defile their body, soul and spirit, causing broken fellowship with the Father, conformity to the world, deaden love for the Lord, unfitness for God's service, to cater to the appetites and impulse of the carnal nature, become desensitized to evil, bring into bondage, and compromise the teachings of Christ. (II Corinthians 6:14-18; Romans 12:2; I Timothy 6:3-6; I John 2:15-17)

The Church

We believe that the church is an assembly of called-out believers and that the church is the Bride of Christ, the body of Christ of which He is the Head. It is subject to Christ and built upon the truth; Christ being the Author of it. We also believe that the local churches, such as Tabernacle Baptist, gather together for practical instruction in the Scriptures so to equip God's people to do the work of ministering toward building up the church, and for fellowship with God and with other believers, and for prayer. (Matthew 18:20; Matthew 16:15-18; I Timothy 3:15; Ephesians 4:12-16; Acts 2:42-47)

At TBC we recognize that the Word of God is essential for successful living. Therefore, it is necessary that it is the authority for standard, convictions, and doctrines. There is no greater foundation where one must build his life upon and there is no other means whereby all of creation is held together. As we look into the Word of God, we see that a loving and wise Creator has given us principles to apply to every facet of our lives. It is with this understanding that the concept of life principles have come about.
